WHAT TYPE OF WOMEN ARE WE CREATING WITH THE BARBIE MOVIE?
Teaches women that men slow them down - and thus, this leads to mistrust in men and hypermasculinity in women
That the only way to 'win' is to fight against men
That women are being brainwashed and to "fight back"
That's it's "wrong" to be serving your man -- is takes women away from feeling their true desires and rather what "looks empowering"
That men hate women (was a line in the movie -- i mean that isn't going to make women or girls feel safe around women at all).
There was nowhere where men were the protectors - Barbies are out on their own (even the pregnant barbie that we saw for two seconds that was called "creepy" was alone) -- not exactly a happy image for a girls future
All the women worked, and the men didn't. It portrayed this picture of "women have to do it all" and it's "so hard to be a woman" -- negative programming like that is great for selling and pushing the feminism agenda but not great for letting women ask for help
Feminists are missing that feminism being pushed in this hardcore way isn't making women happy. It's selling this 'girl power' agenda that ultimately feels good for a little bit because of the adrenaline and validation but soon you realise you just want to be looked after and supported in a relationship. Every Barbie had some high-flying job (lawyer, doctor, judge etc) and while it's great for girls to know they can do anything, there was no option for a girl to dream to be a mother, or do a job that isn't as demanding. The "miss independent" agenda doesn't always equal happiness. Additionally the messaging around men was highly negative fort the most part. Whilst if you really critically analyze the movie, you'd see that it did eventually bring healthy programming for men ...most viewers are going to see it exactly as they consumed it. Girls aren't watching this and then critically analyzing it. They're seeing that the Ken's are pathetic, then obsessed with the patriarchy and take over women, and then the Barbie's "win" by manipulating the Kens.
