A Russian fighter jet dangerously approached a U.S. aircraft over Syria earlier this week, putting American lives at risk and causing an international incident.
The American aircraft was conducting operations supporting the coalition’s Defeat ISIS mission during the too-close-for-comfort incident, which forced the U.S. plane to fly through the Russian jet’s wake turbulence.
US Air Forces Central Commander Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich said “These actions against a manned aircraft represent a new level of unsafe and unprofessional actions by Russian aircraft operating in Syria, We strongly urge Russian forces in Syria to cease reckless and threatening behavior that could result in an accident and loss of life, and adhere to the standards of behavior expected of a professional force.”
Retired Marine aviator Col. Eric Buer, a highly decorated combat pilot, who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and author of the “Ghosts of Baghdad”, agrees.
Buer says that the Russians “clearly reduced the American crew’s ability to safely operate the aircraft and put the four crew members' lives at risk.” The Russian (aircrews) “must know those actions are highly provocative, and that continued hostile acts may force the hands of US commanders in the region.”
Col. Buer’s understanding of military aviation operations, unique high-stress combat aviation experience and knowledge of geo-political dynamics make him the go-to authority on airborne encounters and broader issues concerning military aviation and international security.
Col. Buer’s career includes decades of military aviation experience, including dozens of critical missions in the toughest war zones. His upcoming memoir, "Ghosts of Baghdad," provides unique insights into the complexities of aerial warfare and the challenges faced by aviators in high-stress situations, putting you inside the cockpit and taking you along for the ride.
Buer’s book, “Ghosts of Baghdad”. stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to duty, honor, and the preservation of global peace by U.S. aviators who safeguard our skies.
