For most New Yorkers, hailing a yellow cab is just part of city life. You wave your arm, hop in, complain about traffic and move on. But behind the scenes, there’s a company quietly keeping much of New York’s taxi and rideshare system alive: American Transit Insurance Company.
The insurer has become one of the dominant providers of insurance for New York City taxis, black cars, livery vehicles and rideshare drivers. The company says it now covers roughly 60% to 70% of the city’s TLC-regulated vehicles — making it one of the most important yet least-known players in Gotham transportation.
And now, the company is betting that blockchain technology could help fix some of the biggest problems plaguing the taxi industry.
“We’re trying to create a system that actually helps drivers instead of trapping them,” said American Transit CEO Ralph Bisceglia during a recent interview.
The company, founded in 1972 and writing taxi policies since the early 1980s, specializes in commercial automobile liability insurance for vehicles regulated by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, or TLC.
It’s a difficult business. Large insurers have repeatedly entered and exited the market over the years, scared away by soaring claims costs, lawsuits and fraud allegations. American Transit executives say the company has survived because it remained privately owned and stayed committed to the market while competitors fled.
Without companies willing to insure TLC vehicles, drivers legally can’t operate.
