Berkeley Heights Parent Says School Security ‘Grossly Understaffed’
PUBLIUS SPECIAL GUEST: Jarred Weisfeld, is the CEO of Objective Entertainment, a full service literary agency that represents over 250 authors.
A few weeks ago a child came to school in the Berkeley Heights Public School District in New Jersey with a weapon: a box cutter. The box cutter was confiscated in the morning but the child was permitted to remain at school.
Later that day, the child repeatedly stabbed another student with a writing instrument. Another classmate, who was a witness to the attack, asked the bully to stop. Consequently, the child, who had come to school with a boxcutter, wrote a “kill” list, which included the names of both the victim of his attack and the child, who tried to intervene.
The parents were never notified of the incident. After learning about it from their own child, the parents of the student, who had asked the attacker to stop, contacted the school. The school’s response, or lack of response, highlights the inherent problems within our public schools.
The attacker never faced any disciplinary action. When the concerned parents asked that the violent student be removed from the class, the parents were told that that wouldn’t happen, but the innocent child, who was put on a kill list, could be put in another class, instead.
The school district permitted a child, who brought a box cutter to school, to remain in school, without any disciplinary action. Worse, that same child, engaged in violent behavior later that same day. Once again, the child faced no disciplinary action.
The school district’s complete lack of concern for the safety of the students and their penchant to punish the victims and protect the offenders, is alarming, to say the least. The child, who was caught with the box cutter was permitted to remain in school for roughly 9 days following the incident. The police conducted an investigation, which the school refused to do. None of the parents in the school were notified of what happened.
Jarred Weisfeld, who has children in that school district in New Jersey, had repeatedly tried to address episodes like this in and effort to make a difference and improve security at public schools. Weisfeld even met with the Superintendent and School Board President, during which he invited police officers and a security expert — former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s personal detail — to provide cheap and common sense options to harden the schools and protect the children.
One of the solutions was the use of an app, which teachers and administrators could use on their phones to notify police of an active shooter scenario, for example. Weisfeld even offered to fund the use of the app, which would only cost a few thousand dollars, to test it as part of a pilot program. The district was willing to accept Weisfeld’s donation, but wouldn’t use the money to fund the pilot program. The district citied ‘equity’ as the justification for not implementing it — because the app wouldn’t be available to all of the schools in the district.
But the donation was intended to fund a pilot program, which would then be rolled out district wide.
School district’s are using the word ‘equity’ to implement a dangerous and harmful agenda, while simultaneously using it as an excuse not to implement helpful, common sense, and other safety protocols to protect our children. In this district’s case, police want to be involved in protecting the students in the school district, but the school district is actively denying their help.
After Weisfeld spoke at a School board meeting about the ‘box cutter’ episode, the Superintendent tried to discredit Wiesfeld by claiming to the press that the student had not brought a ‘weapon’ to school but just an inappropriate object. The inappropriate item was a box cutter. Box cutters were the weapon of choice for 9/11 hijackers.
Weisfeld’s point is that there would never have been a “kill” list if the child had been removed from school that morning, after being caught with a box cutter.
These administrators are the reason violence happens in schools. They refuse to recognize problems, cover up when violence happens, and do nothing to prevent violence, even when generous parents are willing to donate their own money to help protect the kids.
